Every year we throw away millions of kilos of used coffee grounds. In The Netherlands, we throw away about 120 million kilos of used coffee ground, every year. Those numbers are really good it means we are enjoying our coffee very much. However, the trash is creating big problems to the environment. Mostly, this used coffee ground will end on the dump or will be burned with all the other thrash. This should not be necessary, because the coffee ground is really easy to keep separated from other thrash and is a really clean and constant residue.
There are many possibilities to reduce the amount of used coffee ground. At OVDesigns we decided that we should join our strengths and work on a project to solve the ongoing problem of the coffee grounds. Together with NHL Stenden University Of Applied Science, we started our Coffee Polymer program. In this program, we will work together to develop fully biobased Coffee Polymers.
The project started in the fall of 2017. Determined to make a coffee-based polymer possible we started our first test program with NHL Stenden University. This program resulted in a positive test sample.
The goal is to make three 100% biobased versions of our Coffee Polymer. All of them will be fully optimized for mass production in the existing plastic industry. The combination of coffee and biobased raw materials will give a strong and beautiful looking material.
